BATEMAN, ISAAC

BATEMAN, ISAAC (ca. 1790–1848). Isaac Bateman, pioneer Red River County settler, was born in North Carolina, probably around 1790. Around 1816 he moved to Arkansas Territory with Charles Burkham and others who settled in the Red River valley. Around 1820 he moved across the river into Texas, where he joined the Burkham Settlementqv in northeastern Red River County, thus becoming one of the earliest settlers in the region. He purchased 400 acres from Ahijah Burkham in Bowie County in 1844. He evidently died in the summer of 1848, for his estate was probated in July of that year.
