CAUDLE, JOHN H.
CAUDLE, JOHN H. (ca. 1835–?). John H. Caudle, pioneer and Confederate soldier, was born in Alabama about 1835. He moved to Texas, settled in Red River County as a merchant in the 1850s, and was married by 1860. In 1861 he was a member of the local Red River County Rangers and in 1862 raised a company that joined Col. Almerine M. Alexander's Thirty-fourth Texas Cavalry. The regiment served in Indian Territory and, as part of what became Polignac's Brigade, fought at Shirley's Ford and Newtonia, Missouri, and Prairie Grove, Arkansas, in 1862. In the spring of 1863 the unit was reorganized with Caudle in command, first as lieutenant colonel and later as colonel. He led the regiment in action at Vidalia and Harrisonburg and in the Red River campaign in Louisiana during 1864. He subsequently continued as commander until the regiment was disbanded in Texas in the spring of 1865. After the war Caudle returned to Red River County, which he represented in Democratic congressional district conventions of 1871 and 1872.
