CARROLL, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, SR.
CARROLL, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, SR. (1809–1869). Benjamin F. Carroll, Texas legislator, was born February 17, 1809, in the Colleton District, South Carolina, son of Absalom, Jr., and Elinore (Robinson) Carroll. On December 5, 1833, Benjamin Franklin married Hulda Harper in Copiah County, Mississippi. While in Mississippi Benjamin served as a colonel in the state militia, and in 1847 he represented Lauderdale County, Mississippi, in the state legislature.
Benjamin Carroll and his family came to Texas in 1848. They lived for three years in Harrison County, but they eventually settled in Dresden in Navarro County where they established a plantation. In Navarro Carroll served for four years as justice of the peace, and during 1858 he represented Navarro County in the Texas legislature.
Benjamin and Hulda raised twelve children, six boys and six girls. Their son Benjamin, Jr., became a noted agriculturalist and fought in the Civil War. Benjamin Franklin Carroll, Sr., died on July 9, 1869, and is buried in the Carroll Family Cemetery in Navarro County.
