DEVORE, JESSE

DEVORE, JESSE (1789–1849). Jesse Devore, early Texas settler of French descent, was born in New Jersey on January 16, 1789. He lived in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana, in 1809 and married his first wife, Polly Black, about 1811. The couple had two children, Hannah and Cornelius E. Devore. The family lived in Mississippi from 1814 to 1826 and moved to the Atascosito District of Texas in 1828. Devore married Rachel (Bohannon) Faulk on October 9, 1833; they had four children. Devore was one of six members of the Liberty Committee of Public Safety in 1835, the year he received his patent for lands in what later became Liberty County. By 1840 he had acquired a number of Liberty town lots and owned three slaves. Seven years later his total estate, which included twenty horses and 100 cattle, was assessed at $3,100. He was a member of the Liberty Masonic Lodge No. 3. Devore died at Liberty on January 24, 1849. Seven years after his death Rachel applied for bounty land as the widow of a veteran of the War of 1812.
