JETT, WILLIAM GLENN

JETT, WILLIAM GLENN (1821–1872). William Glenn Jett, also listed as William H., farmer and Confederate officer, was born in White County, Tennessee, on April 5, 1821, the son of John and Mary (White) Jett. Jett's father and older brothers were among the earliest white settlers of Texas, and at least four of them participated in the Texas Revolution. Jett himself came to Texas in the 1840s and settled in Bexar County and worked as a farmer. Some time after 1850 Jett married Ruth Clarinda Kuykendall. During this time he served sporadically as a Texas Ranger. In August 1863 Jett was chosen as lieutenant colonel for the Fifth Infantry Regiment, Texas State Troops, which was a militia unit authorized by the Provisional Congress of Texas in1862. With this unit, Jett participated in coastal defense duties along the Texas coast around the Galveston and Port Lavaca area. The unit was disbanded in May 1864, and Jett returned to Bexar County. He died in San Antonio on December 24, 1872.
