MAXWELL, THOMAS OWEN
MAXWELL, THOMAS OWEN (1853–1937). Thomas Owen Maxwell, physician, son of C. A. and Cynthia (Owen) Maxwell, was born in Washington County, Virginia, on September 3, 1853. The family moved to Fiskville in Travis County, Texas, in March 1871. Maxwell attended King College, Bristol, Tennessee, graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1878, and returned to Fiskville to practice medicine. He married Florence Porter of Caldwell in 1887. On February 7, 1891, he was appointed assistant physician at the Austin State Hospital, where he served until 1905, when he became superintendent of the Southwest Texas Hospital in San Antonio (later San Antonio State Hospitalqv). He organized the State School for Defective Children in 1917 and served as its superintendent for fourteen years. Maxwell was a Mason and a member of the Travis County Medical Association. He retired in 1931 and in 1934 presented his library of 117 volumes on the history of medicine to the University of Texas. He died at his home in Austin on February 18, 1937.
