SPEER INSTITUTE. A. C. Speer founded Speer Institute (also known as Ferris Institute) at Ferris in Ellis County in 1892 and presented his first graduating class in 1895. Several buildings were constructed; the furnishings were made by the pupils. The school was abandoned in 1907 to form a boys' boarding school.
