BIG SANDY CREEK (POLK COUNTY)
BIG SANDY CREEK (Polk County). Big Sandy Creek rises four miles southeast of Moscow in central Polk County (at 30°52' N, 94°48' W) and flows southeast for forty-seven miles, through Polk County and into Hardin County, to its juncture with Kimball Creek, just northwest of Village Mills (at 30°30' N , 94°26' W). The stream has also been called Alabama Creek by residents of Polk County and Village Creek by residents of Hardin County. It was given its current name in 1960 by the United States Geological Survey. It flows through the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation and is protected for about sixteen miles in Polk County as part of the Big Sandy Creek Corridor of the Big Thicket National Preserve. Numerous tram railroad lines on both banks of the Big Sandy indicate that the region was once used by lumbermen for logging and sawmilling operations. In Hardin County the stream runs through the West Village Mills oilfield before joining with Kimball Creek to form Village Creek.
