Moses and Stephen F. Austin in Texas

This video clip is part of the Texas Talks with Dr. Gregg Cantrell titled: Stephen F. Austin: Empresario of Texas. Moses and Stephen F. Austin in Texas Stephen F. Austin meets former U.S. Congressman from Tennessee, Joseph Hawkins, who provides room and board while teaching Austin law. Meanwhile, Moses comes up with the idea of setting up another American colony further West in Spanish territory like his previous venture. This leads to Moses's famous trip to Texas where he meets the Spanish governor of Texas, Antonio Martinez in San Antonio de Bexar. Suspecting Moses to be an American spy, Martinez ordered Moses to leave Texas immediately. Moses's venture was saved by a chance meeting with a Dutch immigrant named the Baron de Bastrop who, after hearing Moses explain his venture in Texas, interceding on behalf of Moses to Governor Martinez. Martinez decides to endorse Moses' plan to establish an American colony in Texas outside of the established Spanish settlements. Upon making the trip back to Missouri, Moses fell ill even though he began to advertise his American colony with much enthusiasm. Moses's condition soon worsened and he decided to pass his project on to Stephen who was reluctant to follow in his father's footsteps. However, Stephen changes his mind after his father's death and headed to Texas to pursue the venture.
