Primary Source Lesson Plan Page from The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza

n the summer of 2013 The Sixth Floor Museum received a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to support John F. Kennedy, Dallas and the Struggle for Civil Rights, a weeklong teacher training institute. Participants from all over North Texas—and one educator from Virginia—heard presentations from humanities scholars, an archivist and a civil rights activist. The educators also visited important Dallas sites related to President Kennedy’s assassination and the Civil Rights Movement to broaden their content knowledge about the civil rights context for Kennedy’s visit to Texas in 1963. Institute participants created primary source-based lesson plans designed to engage students and help them put the 50th anniversary of the assassination and several civil rights milestones into context. The Sixth Floor Museum’s education department is pleased to share its growing selection of dynamic primary source lesson plans and we encourage teachers to submit additional lesson plans for us to share with teachers around the world.
